Tom Rooney to teach at Palm Beach Atlantic

Former Congressman Tom Rooney, a Republican who represented districts in Southeast and Southwest Florida, will teach a course in criminal law at the Palm Beach Atlantic University’s LeMieux Center for Public Policy this fall.

“Rooney has vast experience in law and politics that makes it possible for him to teach in many areas,” James Todd, an assistant professor of politics said in a news release from the university. “We are excited about his willingness to lend his expertise to our students.”

Rooney is also expected to teach an elective in American politics and policy at the West Palm Beach school.

Rooney previously taught constitutional and criminal law at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. N.Y.

Before running for Congress in 2008, Rooney was a prosecutor under then-Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist.

Rooney retired from Congress last year after representing districts on both coasts, a result of redistricting. Rooney last represented Florida’s 17th Congressional District, which stretches from Okeechobee County on the east to Sarasota and Charlotte counties on the gulf coast.

Before redistricting, Rooney represented Florida’s 16th Congressional District, which included northern Palm Beach County and jutted west from the Treasure Coast.
