A political committee seeking to make it harder to amend the Florida Constitution received $816,000 in in-kind and cash contributions last month, with most of the aid going toward the collection of petition signatures, according to a newly filed finance report.
The committee, Keep Our Constitution Clean PC, has filed two ballot proposals that, if ultimately approved by voters, would make it harder to amend the Constitution.
One of the proposals would require voters to approve constitutional amendments twice — instead of once — for them to take effect.
As of Tuesday, 5,145 valid petition signatures had been submitted to the state for that proposal, according to the Florida Division of Elections website.
The other proposal that the committee has filed would require two-thirds of voters — rather than the current 60 percent — to approve constitutional amendments.
Only one valid signature had been submitted to the Division of Elections for that proposal as of Tuesday.
The new finance report shows the $816,000 in contributions coming last month from the nonprofit Keep Our Constitution Clean, Inc.
The nonprofit and political committee are based in Fort Lauderdale and share leaders, records show.
Of the contributions in July, about $791,000 were described as in-kind contributions of petition gathering, according to the finance report.
To get a measure on the 2020 ballot, the committee would need to submit at least 766,200 valid petition signatures to the state.
