FHBPA Claiming Insurance Pays Off Twice

FHBPA Claiming Insurance Pays Off Twice

The FHBPA claiming Protection paid on two claims in 2010 after a quiet 2009 when no one was unfortunate enough to claim a horse that had to be destroyed after the race.  In October owner Ron Levy claimed a three year old that had been second in his prior start and won the one before that by three lengths.  Unfortunately, the horse took a bad step and had to be put down after the race.  The FHBPA’s Claiming Protection paid half of the claiming price of $6,250, because Mr. Levy and his trainer had signed FHBPA membership cards that entitled them to free Claiming Protection among other FHBPA benefits.

In November bad luck struck again as the Sabine Stable claimed yet another three year old that had been second in his prior two starts and was a 2-1 second choice.  This colt unfortunately sustained a severe fracture and had to be put down also.  The claiming price was $16,000 so because Mr. Greeley and his trainer were eligible for FHBPA’s Claiming Protection because of their signed membership cards the FHBPA put an $8,000 check in their horsemen’s account at the Florida Horsemen’s Bookkeeper which the FHBPA operates.

While the claiming protection check from the FHBPA can’t bring back the claimed horse, it does at least ease the financial pain of the owner.  This program pays 50% of any claim in which the claimed horse dies or is euthanized within 12 hours of the race.  The limit for claiming protection is $15,000, so only $15,000 would be paid on a horse claimed for $30,000, $40,000 or $50,000 or higher.  The FHBPA limits owners to one claiming protection occurrence per year and limits its yearly total Claiming Protection to $50,000 in any calendar year.

Owners and Trainers, if you haven’t signed an FHBPA membership card in the last four or five years or if you have never signed a card be sure to stop by the FHBPA office at Calder or the Florida Horsemen’s Bookkeeping office at Gulfstream to pick up some cards.  You may also call the FHBPA office at 305-625-4591 to have a card, or cards, mailed to you.
